Joining The Team

The MCH Equity Lab encourages dependable, highly-motivated undergraduate and graduate students to consider joining the lab. Students who can commit to at least 1-2 academic years are strongly encouraged to apply.

Is the Lab currently accepting new students?

Currently, the Lab is NOT accepting new students.

TIMELINE: When does the Lab accept students?

The Lab begins accepting inquiries for new RAs and Community Engagement interns (depending on available spots) between May 1 – June 15 each year. We hold orientation in July/August to prepare the team for the following academic year.

Does the Lab accept students from Cumulative Experience (KINE 4359), the Honors program, McNair Scholars, and Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program?

Yes, we do!

  • KINE 4359 Cumulative Experience: Students must be accepted into the Lab the semester before they enroll in KINE 4359 to ensure that they serve in the lab for a full academic year. Please consult with the Lab’s timeline for accepting students and plan accordingly.
  • Honors College Students: Students who are completing a Honors senior capstone project must be accepted into the Lab the semester before their senior capstone project is due to ensure they serve in the lab for a full academic year. Please consult with the Lab’s timeline for accepting students and plan accordingly.
  • Other UTA Research Programs: Students who are interested in working in the Lab as a part of a research program (McNair Scholars, UROP, etc.) should consult with the Lab’s timeline for accepting students and plan accordingly.

What positions are available in the Lab?

Research Assistants
The Research Assistant (RA) position is open to UTA undergraduate (sophomore – senior) and graduate students, and in special circumstances, non-UTA students. Responsibilities include: 1) attend regular lab meetings, 2) dedicate a minimum of 8-10 hours per week per semester to research activities 3) develop workplans and work collaboratively with team members to complete assigned research project tasks, 4) complete assigned readings and professional development activities (e.g., updating CV or resume).

Community Engagement Interns
The Community Engagement Interns position is open to UTA undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in practice/community-oriented projects. For example, CE interns may complete projects that are in direct service to a local maternal or infant health related organization or coalition. The MCH Equity Lab collaborates with various organizations and coalitions in the community.  Responsibilities include: 1) attend regular lab meetings; 2) dedicate a minimum of 8-10 hours per week per semester to assigned work, 3) develop work plans and work collaboratively with team members to complete projects, 4) complete professional development activities (e.g., update resume/CV) (as needed).

Does the Lab offer paid positions?

While we strive to provide paid positions for students, it largely depends on available funding. Most positions in the Lab are volunteer. However, there are some paid positions that may become available to students who have seniority in the Lab. Also, UTA undergraduate students are encouraged to consider applying for the UTA Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) or the UTA McNair Scholars Program which provides financial support to eligible students. Students who apply to these programs can indicate their interest in working with the MCH Equity Lab in their application/interview process.

Can I join this Lab if I am already working in another faculty member’s Lab?

No, students are encouraged to join one research lab. This policy was created to ensure that as many students can get the opportunity to gain research experience and to avoid creating too much of an extra-curricular workload for students.
