Collaborative Team receives CRHN Rural Academic-Community Partnership Pilot Project Award
This year, Project SOAR (SIMULATION-based training support emergent OBSTETRIC capacity AND care in RURAL hospitals), an academic-community partnership with Faith Community Hospital and CONHI researchers, was funded by the Center for Rural Health and Nursing’s Academic-Community Partnership Pilot Grant funded.
Our core research team includes Jessica G. Smith, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE, Kyrah K. Brown PhD, Joy O. Henry, MSN,RN (Faith Community Hospital), Jennifer Roye, MSN, RN, CHSE, CNE, Melynda Hutchings, DNP, RN-BC, Caitlin Coat, RN (Faith Community Hospital), Leigh Ann Wheeler ,DNP, MSN, RN, and Ashlee Hansen-Bell, MSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM.
About Our Project
The objectives of this project are to: (1) assess community stakeholders’ learning needs, current practices for emergent obstetric care, and perceptions regarding the need for emergent obstetric care, (2) design a health equity-informed obstetric simulation-based training, and pilot/evaluate the simulation-based training. This project provides an opportunity for stakeholders to voice their concerns and needs related to OB care Jack County is one of few rural Texas counties with OB care, and it is adjacent to two counties that qualify as maternity care deserts. The number of obstetric patients in this community has increased over the last few years andĀ FCH has had a strong commitment to training, as demonstrated by their participation in the TexasAIM initiative. However, there is also a need for additional training opportunities to increase nurses capacity and preparedness to provide emergent obstetric care. This will be accomplished by leveraging theĀ simulation education and training expertise of team member, Jennifer Roye, Assistant Dean for Simulation and Technology in CONHI’s Smart Hospital .
